More than a million dollars was spent to the Russian Space Agency in 2001 to send a 6-inches pizza to the International Space Station. Yuri Usachov, a Russian cosmonaut, has the privilege of becoming the first person in space to have a pizza delivery.
World War II aided in the widespread availability of pizza.
Prior to WWII, pizza was mostly consumed by Italian immigrants in their native towns. To supplement often depleting rations, Allied troops in Italy began consuming local cuisine. Local bakers couldn’t keep up with the demand for pizza from US soldiers, and when they returned home after the war, they carried their passion for pizza with them.
National Pizza Month occurs in October.
In October of 1984, it was developed by Gerry Durnell, the founder of Pizza Today magazine. Perhaps the reality that Halloween is among the busiest times of the pizza year influenced Gerry’s decision to designate October as National Pizza Month.
